Carpathian National Nature Parks Receive 15 Vehicles from German Partners

October 2024

The Frankfurt Zoological Society, with funds provided by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), which is an important part of the German government’s international climate finance commitments, has purchased 5 Toyota Hilux cars and 10 Honda XR 150 motorcycles for the institutions of the Carpathian region’s nature reserve fund. This was made possible with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. The additional vehicles will help strengthen the capacity of the national parks to fulfill their nature protection tasks.

The Hutsulshchyna, Cheremoskyi, Skolivski Beskydy, and Zacharovanyi Krai National Nature Parks received 5 cars and 10 motorcycles. These vehicles will be used for scientific research, patrolling the territory, organizing tourism and other tasks. Particular attention will be paid to monitoring and protection of biodiversity, wildlife protection and preservation of natural ecosystems.

“Despite all the difficulties faced by nature parks and reserves in Ukraine today, it is very important to continue their environmental protection activities. After all, preserving the unique nature of the Carpathians cannot be postponed, it is our common European duty. That is why we provide ongoing support to the institutions of the Carpathian Nature Reserve Fund and will continue to help them overcome new challenges,” said Michael Brombacher, Head of FZS Europe Department.

The new vehicles, combined with the SMART system, will significantly increase the efficiency of conservation activities. Using cars and motorcycles, employees will be able to move around the national park faster and, accordingly, respond more quickly to environmental threats. The use of four-wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles will facilitate patrolling and monitoring of natural resources, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, which is critical for the preservation of the Carpathian primeval forests and control of visits to strictly protected areas. The provided vehicles will play a key role in ensuring mobility and efficiency of environmental protection tasks.

It should be noted that the Frankfurt Zoological Society, with the support of its partners, undertakes to provide further service support for cars and motorcycles, which takes place in a specially equipped workshop in the village of Mykulychyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region. The partners systematically help with vehicle insurance.

Since 2022, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and the Federal Foreign Office, has been implementing the International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is an important component of the German government’s international commitments to finance climate change and biodiversity protection. In particular, in March 2024, as part of IKI support, the Frankfurt Zoological Society donated a Renault Duster to the administration of the Zacharovanyi Krai national nature park.
